Kailash Tour Disrupted Due to Flood at Nepal Tibet Keyrong Border

In the early hours of this morning, around 4:00 AM, communities along the Bhotekoshi River were shaken by a powerful and unexpected surge in water levels. Residents described the terrifying moment as resembling an earthquake, with the ground trembling and loud rumbling noises echoing through the valley, causing widespread fear and confusion.

Authorities are currently investigating the cause of the incident. Early reports suggest it may be the result of a glacial lake outburst flood or a sudden release of water due to heavy upstream rainfall or dam activity. These types of surges are particularly concerning in the fragile Himalayan ecosystem, where melting glaciers and unpredictable weather patterns are increasingly common.

Rasuwa Deputy Superintendent of Police Hem Bahadur Shahi said that 18 people are missing, including three Nepali policemen, three drivers, six Nepali workers, and six Chinese citizens.

This event comes at a critical time for cross-border travel. With the Kailash Yatra season in full swing, thousands of Indian and international pilgrims are preparing to cross into Tibet via the Tatopani (Keyrong) border a route now under potential threat from this river surge. Delays or rerouting of travel plans may be necessary if infrastructure or safety conditions deteriorate further.

Travelers, pilgrims, and tour operators are advised to remain vigilant and monitor updates from local authorities. Those planning to join the Kailash Yatra should check with their tour providers regarding alternative arrangements or travel advisories.
