Best Time to Visit Nepal Month by Month

Nepal is a beautiful country that you can visit in every season. However, the best time to visit depends on what you want to do. If you want to trek in the Himalayas, see clear mountain views, explore villages, or enjoy outdoor activities, choosing the right month is very important.

Nepal has different weather in different parts of the country. The lowland Terai is warm, Kathmandu is usually mild, and the Himalayan areas are cold. The weather also changes with altitude. As you go higher into the mountains, the temperature becomes colder.

For most travelers, spring and autumn are the best seasons to visit Nepal. Spring is from March to May, while autumn is from September to November. These months usually have pleasant weather, clear mountain views, and good trekking conditions.

But every month has something different to offer. January is cold and peaceful, March brings flowers, April offers excellent trekking weather, the monsoon makes Nepal green, and October and November bring some of the clearest mountain views of the year.

Here is a simple month-by-month guide to help you choose the best time for your Nepal trip.

January:  Cold but Clear

January is one of the coldest months in Nepal. The mornings and evenings can be very cold, especially in the mountains. However, daytime weather is often sunny and pleasant in Kathmandu, Pokhara, and lower areas. The Himalayan regions are much colder. Some high mountain passes can have heavy snow, making high-altitude trekking more difficult.

The good side of January is that there are fewer tourists. You can enjoy Kathmandu's cultural sites, Pokhara, Chitwan, and lower-altitude hiking trails without large crowds. Mountain views can also be very clear on sunny days. January is a good choice if you do not mind cold weather and want a quieter Nepal experience.

Best for: Kathmandu sightseeing, Pokhara, Chitwan, cultural tours, short hikes, and experienced winter trekkers.

Trekking: Good for lower-altitude routes. High-altitude trekking can be very cold.

Weather: Cold, dry, and often sunny.

February:  Winter Slowly Ends

February is still a winter month, but the weather slowly starts getting warmer. The mornings and nights remain cold, but afternoons become more comfortable, especially at lower elevations. By the end of February, spring begins to make its way into Nepal. February is a good month for travelers who want fewer crowds. It can also be a good time for trekking, especially toward the end of the month. The mountain views can be beautiful on clear days. Lower hills start becoming warmer, and the landscape slowly begins changing from winter to spring.

Best for: Trekking, cultural tours, Kathmandu, Pokhara, wildlife, and photography.

Trekking: Good, especially in the second half of February.

Weather: Cool mornings, pleasant afternoons, and cold nights.

March:  Spring Begins

March is one of the best months to visit Nepal. Winter starts to disappear, temperatures become comfortable, and spring arrives in the hills. This is also a great month for trekking. Many forests begin to bloom, and rhododendrons, the national flower of Nepal, start adding beautiful colors to the hills.

The weather is generally comfortable for walking. It is not too hot in the lower areas and not too cold in the mountains during the daytime March is also a good time to combine trekking with sightseeing. You can visit Kathmandu, explore Pokhara, experience village life, and then head into the mountains.

Best for: Everest Base Camp Trek, Annapurna Trek, Langtang Trek, village walks, photography, and cultural tours.

Trekking: Excellent.

Weather: Mild, comfortable, and becoming warmer.

If you want flowers, comfortable temperatures, and beautiful mountain scenery, March is a great choice.

AprilOne of the Best Months

April is one of the most popular months to visit Nepal. The weather is usually comfortable, spring is fully active, and the hills are full of flowers. Rhododendrons can be seen in many trekking areas, creating colorful views along the trails. April is also a major trekking month. Popular routes such as Everest Base Camp, Annapurna Base Camp, Annapurna Circuit, Langtang, and Manaslu are busy with trekkers. The lower areas become warmer, while the mountain regions remain comfortable for trekking. April is also an important month for mountaineering and climbing expeditions.

Best for: Trekking, climbing, mountain photography, village tours, and cultural experiences.

Trekking: Excellent.

Weather: Warm in lower areas and comfortable in the mountains.

If you want a combination of good weather, flowers, and mountain views, April is one of the best choices.

MayWarm and Getting Wetter

May is the last month of the main spring season. The first part of May can still be very good for trekking. However, temperatures become warmer, especially in Kathmandu, Pokhara, and lower areas. As the month continues, pre-monsoon rain and clouds can become more common. Mountain views may not always be as clear as they are in March or April. May is also an important month for mountain climbing, especially in the Everest region. For trekking, the beginning of May is usually better than the end of the month.

Best for: Trekking, mountaineering, Everest region, cultural tours, and adventure trips.

Trekking: Very good in early May.

Weather: Warm with increasing clouds and occasional rain.

June: Monsoon Begins

June brings the start of the monsoon season in Nepal. Rain becomes more common across the country. Trekking trails can become wet and muddy, and clouds may cover the mountains. For this reason, June is not the best month for most popular trekking routes. However, Nepal has some special areas that receive less rain. Upper Mustang and parts of Manang are located in areas protected from much of the monsoon rain. The monsoon also makes Nepal very green. Rice fields, forests, rivers, and waterfalls become beautiful.

Best for: Upper Mustang, Upper Dolpo, rain-shadow areas, cultural tours, and green landscapes.

Trekking: Limited on most routes but good in some rain-shadow areas.

Weather: Wet, cloudy, warm, and green.

July:  Rainy Season

July is one of the wettest months in Nepal. Rain is common in Kathmandu, Pokhara, and most trekking areas. Roads and trails can become muddy, and landslides can sometimes affect transportation.

The mountains are often hidden behind clouds, so July is not ideal if clear Himalayan views are your main goal. But there is another side to July. Nepal becomes incredibly green. Rice fields are planted, waterfalls are full, and the countryside looks fresh and beautiful. If you want to trek during July, choose a rain-shadow destination such as Upper Mustang or Upper Dolpo.

Best for: Upper Mustang, Upper Dolpo, cultural tours, countryside photography, and quiet travel.

Trekking: Best in rain-shadow areas.

Weather: Wet, humid, cloudy, and very green.

August:  Green Nepal

August continues the monsoon season. Rain is still common, especially in the hills and lower areas. However, the countryside looks beautiful because of the heavy rainfall. The rice fields are bright green, waterfalls are powerful, and forests are full of life. August is not the best month for classic Everest Base Camp or Annapurna trekking because of rain and cloudy mountain views. However, it can be a good month for travelers who want to explore Nepal differently. Upper Mustang and Upper Dolpo are good options because they receive much less rain than many other parts of Nepal.

Best for: Rain-shadow trekking, cultural experiences, photography, and quiet travel.

Trekking: Limited on normal routes; better in rain-shadow areas.

Weather: Rainy, humid, and very green.

SeptemberMonsoon Ends

September is a month of change. The beginning of September can still have rain, but the weather gradually becomes better. By the second half of the month, the skies usually start clearing and trekking conditions improve. The landscape is still very green because of the monsoon rain. At the same time, the mountains begin appearing more clearly. Late September can be a very good time to start trekking before the main October crowds arrive.

Best for: Trekking, cultural tours, photography, and mountain adventures.

Trekking: Good, especially toward the end of September.

Weather: Improving, with less rain and clearer skies.

If you want to travel just before the busiest trekking season, late September is a good option.

October:  The Best Month for Many Travelers

October is often considered the best month to visit Nepal. The monsoon is usually over, the skies become clear, and the weather is comfortable. Mountain views can be excellent, making October one of the most popular months for trekking. Everest Base Camp, Annapurna, Manaslu, Langtang, and other trekking routes become busy with travelers from around the world. The weather is generally dry and stable. The countryside is still green after the monsoon, and the mountains look beautiful against clear blue skies. October is also a great month for cultural tours, village visits, photography, rafting, and other outdoor activities. The main disadvantage is that popular trekking routes can be crowded, so booking in advance is a good idea.

Best for: Almost everything—trekking, mountain views, cultural tours, wildlife, photography, and adventure.

Trekking: Excellent.

Weather: Clear, dry, and comfortable.
If you are visiting Nepal for the first time and want excellent mountain views, October is one of the safest choices.

November: Clear Mountain Views

November is another excellent month to visit Nepal. The weather remains dry and stable, and the skies are often very clear. This makes November one of the best months for mountain photography. Daytime temperatures are comfortable for trekking, although nights become colder at higher elevations. The popular trekking routes can be busy, especially during the first half of the month. Booking accommodation and trekking services in advance is recommended. By the end of November, winter starts to become more noticeable, particularly in the high mountains.

Best for: Everest Base Camp, Annapurna, Manaslu, Langtang, mountain photography, and cultural tours.

Trekking: Excellent.

Weather: Dry, clear, comfortable days, and cold nights.

If clear mountain views are your main priority, November is one of the best months.

December:  Winter Returns

December brings winter back to Nepal. The temperature drops, especially in the mountains. However, lower areas such as Kathmandu, Pokhara, and Chitwan can still be pleasant during the daytime. The skies can remain clear, giving you beautiful mountain views on sunny days.

High-altitude trekking becomes more difficult because of cold temperatures and possible snow. Lower-altitude trekking routes can still be enjoyable. December also has fewer tourists than October and November, so it can be a good choice if you prefer a quieter trip.

Best for: Kathmandu, Pokhara, Chitwan, cultural tours, lower-altitude trekking, and quiet travel.

Trekking: Good on selected lower routes.

Weather: Cold mornings and nights, sunny days, and generally dry conditions.

Best Months for Trekking in Nepal

If trekking is the main reason for your Nepal trip, the best months are generally:

March, April, May, October, and November.

Late September can also be very good. Spring offers flowers, green hills, and comfortable temperatures. Autumn offers clear skies and excellent mountain views. For first-time trekkers, October and November are especially popular because the weather is usually stable and the mountain views are impressive.

Best Time for Everest Base Camp Trek

The best seasons for the Everest Base Camp Trek are spring and autumn. March and April offer pleasant temperatures and colorful landscapes. May can also be good, especially early in the month.

Late September, October, and November are excellent for clear mountain views. Winter is possible for experienced trekkers but is much colder. During the monsoon, rain and clouds can make the classic Everest Base Camp route less attractive. If your main dream is to see Mount Everest clearly, we recommend choosing the spring or autumn trekking seasons.

Best Time for Annapurna Trek

The Annapurna region is also best during spring and autumn.

March and April are beautiful because flowers bloom across the hills.

October and November are excellent for clear mountain views and stable trekking weather. Some northern parts of the Annapurna region, such as Manang and Mustang, are protected from much of the monsoon rain. This means certain routes can also be explored during the summer months.

Best Time for Kathmandu

Kathmandu can be visited throughout the year. Spring and autumn are especially comfortable for sightseeing. You can explore ancient temples, monasteries, traditional neighborhoods, markets, and UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Winter is also a good time for cultural tours because the weather is generally dry, although mornings and evenings can be cold.

The monsoon brings rain, but Kathmandu can still be visited if you do not mind occasional showers.

Best Time for Pokhara

Pokhara is beautiful throughout the year, but weather makes a big difference. Spring and autumn are excellent for mountain views, hiking, boating, and outdoor activities. Winter offers cool and generally dry weather. The monsoon brings heavy rain, and mountain views may be hidden by clouds. However, the landscape becomes very green during this period.

For clear views of the Annapurna and Machhapuchhre ranges, October and November are among the best choices.

Best Time for Chitwan

Chitwan is a great place to visit after or before your mountain trek.

Winter and spring are comfortable for jungle activities, wildlife watching, canoeing, and village tours. Summer can be hot, while the monsoon brings heavy rain. A Nepal trip that combines Kathmandu + trekking + Pokhara + Chitwan is a great way to experience several different parts of the country.

Spring vs Autumn in Nepal

Many travelers ask whether spring or autumn is better.

Spring – March to May

Spring is best if you want:

  • Flowers and rhododendrons
  • Comfortable trekking temperatures
  • Green hills
  • Mountain adventures
  • A colorful trekking experience

Autumn – September to November

Autumn is best if you want:

  • Clear mountain views
  • Dry weather
  • Comfortable trekking
  • Blue skies
  • Excellent photography
  • Stable trekking conditions

Both seasons are excellent. If your biggest priority is clear mountain views, autumn is often the better choice. If you love flowers and colorful landscapes, spring is a wonderful choice.

Can You Visit Nepal During the Monsoon?

Yes, you can. Nepal is open throughout the year, but you should choose your destination according to the weather. During June, July, and August, most of Nepal receives monsoon rain. This can make some trekking routes wet and difficult. However, areas such as Upper Mustang and Upper Dolpo are much drier because they are located in the rain shadow of the Himalayas. Monsoon is also a beautiful time to see Nepal's green countryside, rice fields, waterfalls, and rivers. So, monsoon does not mean you should completely avoid Nepal. It simply means you need to choose the right destination.

At Trek Ways Nepal, we want you to have the best possible experience in Nepal. Choosing the right month is an important part of a successful trip, especially when you are planning a Himalayan trek. For most trekking adventures, we recommend visiting Nepal during March to May or September to November. These months usually offer better trekking weather, comfortable temperatures, and beautiful mountain views. October and November are especially popular because the skies are often clear after the monsoon. Spring, especially March and April, is another excellent choice if you want to see rhododendron flowers and colorful mountain trails. We also understand that some travelers can only travel during the monsoon or winter. In that case, our local team can help you choose the right destination for the season. For example, Upper Mustang can be a good choice during the monsoon, while lower-altitude treks can be suitable during winter. Our goal is not simply to take you to Nepal; we want you to enjoy your journey, stay comfortable, and see Nepal at its best. Plan your trip with Trek Ways Nepal and choose the season that matches your adventure. We recommend visiting Nepal during the best months so you can enjoy clearer skies, better trails, beautiful landscapes, and unforgettable Himalayan experiences.
