Urgent warnings were issued for communities nearby this morning after a major avalanche occurred in the renowned Manaslu mountain in Samagaun of Chumanubri Rural Municipality-1 in north Gorkha. This morning at approximately nine in the morning, an avalanche near Birendra Lake at the foot of the mountain caused the lake to rise and overflow into the Budhigandaki River below.
The possibility of a flood in the Budhigandaki has alarmed the authorities, who have highlighted the serious risk to villages downstream.
Director of Police Basudev Pathak, who heads the District Police Office Gorkha, verified to the Rastriya Samachar Samiti that a police team was sent to the scene as soon as he received news of the avalanche. Despite the fact that a wooden bridge over the river has been damaged by the rising water levels, preliminary evaluations point to no immediate threat of additional damage, SP Pathak continued.
Standing at 8,163 meters, Manaslu is the eighth-highest peak in the world and a popular destination for high-altitude trekking. This event highlights the importance of safety measures in similar regions, such as the Everest Region, Langtang Region, and Kanchenjunga trekking in Nepal, where avalanches and other natural challenges can pose risks to trekkers and locals alike.
Whether exploring the beauty of high-altitude treks or venturing into Nepal’s rugged terrains, events like this serve as a reminder of nature's power and the need for caution in these magnificent yet unpredictable landscapes.
